THE GOLD CLAWS

I wish I could say it went well that day and all was beauty white petals and poesies,
But she wouldn’t smile, refused to laugh awhile, she just couldn’t be warm and cozy.
That is I wish I could say that she loved the idea and fell right in line,
Like a glutton at the buffet, drooling ready to dine,
But she just painted her toenails gold and took it for a challenge.

Ah, that is I wish I could say that we sailed away
And left the sun in the bay, slowly sinking.
Just a gently cloaked face, not one to replace, a change of pace in this marathon race,
But she wouldn’t turn she just thought it a disgrace

A ticket to the dance, to watch balloons
Float down from the ceiling would be charming.
Maybe a waltz or a ball in the closet down off the hall,

It wasn’t that I failed or tried to jump bail.
It wasn’t that I didn’t exercise proper judgment.
It wasn’t that I ran away or refused to play.
Or lied without reason, committing treason was never in my mind

It’s just that all I could say when she looked at me that way,
Is that I had to dance, and I had no judgment to begin with.
And she never lent a hand she didn’t even like the band,
She just painted her toenails gold and she took it for a challenge.

But don’t mistake my silence
For that of dissatisfaction.
You might say it’s just a natural reaction.
And I always said play with the beat if you want to keep your feet,
If you don’t dance you might wind up in traction
