A deuce creased from years of losing
Prairie howlers don’t dare come close to town
Low in the Badlands tracking
Hunting Black Hills raccoon for trade

Will I ever see that main street parade?
Will I ever see the bread that she made?
Will I ever feel her whole body shake?
If I come home empty handed?

When I left for Whiskey Diggins up in Sierra,
How was I to know that the gold was all out?
Within three months I was begging for a job driving cattle.
After six months my only companion was doubt.

The days find me knee deep in mud and ice water.
The nights find me curled up asleep all alone.
I thought I had a nugget once I even shouted Eureka!
I thought I heard your voice once but it was just the wind’s moan.

The lonesome ride home from the gold is like:
A Rockies pass in late September
A lost life too far gone to remember
High beneath the cliff face
Lighting a torch in a kettle full of coyotes

Will I ever see that main street parade?
Will I ever taste the bread that you made?
Will I ever feel your whole body shake?
